WAYS TO SECURE YOUR COMPUTER


Install Antivirus Programs
One and probably the most common part is using Anti-virus. Most anti-virus programs work much the same way. AV look at the contents of each file, particularly executable one's such as .bat, .exe, .pif, .scr and .vbs, searching for specific patterns that match a profile called a virus signature. This signature selects and matches the files that are harmful to your computer. It's up to you if you want to delete, quarantine or leave the file alone. Patterns needs to be updated regularly to give you more protection to new and upcoming viruses.

Install Firewalls
It doesn't require a computer wiz to be able to install and run a Firewall. Mostly available firewalls are set to be user friendly or "Plug and Play". It was designed to allow traffic commonly used by an ordinary users such as HTTP, POP3, SMTP, FTP, Ping and so on. This way, any ports or point of entry that may be used by an intruder will be blocked.

Keep your Operating System and Software Updated
Software vendors provide patches and security updates to fixed the flaw and vulnerabilities in their software. As mentioned earlier, software are not created perfectly. It may take some patched and updating before the software will be fully secured.

Beware of E-mail Attachment
Unsolicited e-mails containing unfamiliar return addresses are common now. Most of these mail uses social engineering to tell you of a contest that you may have won or the details of a product that you might like. The sender is trying to encourage you to open the letter, and execute whatever attached to it. Beware of the viruses bonded to these attached files. As much as possible, delete this emails as soon as possible. Email viruses and worms are fairly common. If you’ve not received one, chances are you will.

Use Strong Password Characters
Intruders most common method of password of password cracking is to use trial-and-error, or technically called "brute-force". By bombarding a login scheme with all the words in a dictionary, they may “discover” the password that unlocks it. If they know something about you, such as your spouse’s name, birthdate, plate numbers etc... clever intruders can narrow the range of possible passwords you have used.

Clever intruders can be prevented by clever users. It is advisable not to use any information related to you as mentioned above, instead use a password not found in dictionary of words, or better mixed it with some characters. The longer the password, the hard it is to brute-forced. Experts advise to use passwords more than 12 characters.
