Privacy Center

Privacy Center is considered as rogue security program developed for MS Windows system. It will attempt to persuade users into obtaining the registered version by providing fake scan results on victim’s computer. This fake anti-virus software comes from a large group of malicious applications that has created various variants of it.

Privacy Center is just a mimic of the other versions and only obvious change is its name. Graphical user interface and method of propagation remains the same. Usually, users can acquire Privacy Center from web sites that disguise either online virus scanner or one that offers free videos. As for fake online scanner sites, it will automatically run a scan on visitor’s machine. Several threats will be identified on the said scan and prompt user to download Privacy Center as a cleaner. While on bogus video sites, user will receive prompt stating that multimedia player is required to view online movies.

Innocent users may think that the endorsed program will help remove a threat that is why so many have fallen into the trick of Privacy Center. Right after it is installed; it will carry another local scan on the computer and detects dozens of threats. An advice to remove these infections follows but can only be performed if the licensed version of Privacy Center is purchased. Users will be brought to an online payment web site where credit card account is needed to complete the transaction.

  4. DanBrazil

I have the same problem as Jak. I cant use my computer…I cant even see my desktop, only this Privacy Center. is there a way to remove it by safe mode as i tried before?

  5. John Davis

First thing you should know is that this virus/trogan comes from PRIVACY-CENTR.ORG so I would recommend sending many complaints to their backbone providers to get them shut down.

I was able to CTRL ALT DEL and shut the process down. I then went to RUN and typed MSCONFIG then in the “startup” tab, uncheck Privacy Center (PC.exe) and I have no problem. My machine works fine now.

  6. Matt Ivey

I have the same problem; I can’t get past the Privacy Center on start-up with the Admin account. I am on here with the Guest account. Unfortunetly I can’t do much with this account; I can’t even install the program recommended above. When I CTRL-ALT-DELETE and end the “PC.exe” process it just closes the Privacy Center and goes to a blue screen. Any suggestions?

  7. LB

CTRL + ALT + DEL and then go to RUN and type: “explorer” without the “”.

  8. zonamojo

I caught this malware as well. I used malwarebytes and it fixed me right up.

    Thanks for the help.

  9. zorex

how can u start the run on a blank screen??

  10. zorex

    thanks. instructions for vista.
1.when the privacy center starts press ctrl+alt+del start task manager and end process on the Processes tab (pc.exe) file, and select new task(Run)
    4. type on the run explorer
    5. you will see your desktop on your screen.

    thanks again

  11. LB

  12. mattandbenny

I have the exact same problem but cant get rid of it. After I login it automatically starts up and will not allow me to exit out of it. My desk top never loads, and behind its window is just a black screen.

I’ve tried control-alt-delete but when i do that the whole screen just goes black. Any ideas on what i can do?

  13. jcg

LB & John Davis thanks so much for the info. I was starting to get pretty annoyed. Appreciate it guys.

  14. Lozrenzo

Remove Privacy Center manually – kill processes pc.exe and agent.exe using Windows Task Manager and then delete C:Program FilesPCenter
    That should do the trick!

  15. BRiCE

OMG thank you guys for the help! worked perfectly! My girlfriend is sooooo happy that her computer could be saved! you guys rock!

  16. KE

Am I the only one experiencing this issue ALONG WITH two or three sentences in a foreign female voice upon login? (Sounds Swedish, German)

  17. AF

I cannot thank you guys enough.

  18. tn

I had the same thing with my computer. I paid 129 to this privacy center and it didn’t do anything. Does anyone know how can i get my money back from that company? I couldn’t find a contact info?

  19. John

Just call your credit card company and have them stop payment. I would also have a new card issued so whoever created the virus can’t use the info you gave them.

  20. rose

  23. Pam

I have the problem of Privacy Center starting when i turn on my computer. I cannot access my desktop, or the task manager, as it is ‘disabled’. Also, that means that the Control- Alt – Delete is also not accessible. Please tell me how i can get rid of this. It’s driving me mad.

  24. Jim

I had the same problem, hit F8 to go into safe mode during startup. Then access the administrator acct and perform system restore to a previous date. I downloaded CCCleaner. It found Privacy Center and removed it.

    Good luck.

  27. computer-illiterate

    Thanks webmaster – totally worked.

  28. Penny R

Thank you so much!!!!!!! I did what Lozrenzo said to do and it worked perfectly!!!!

  29. Steve T

For those with the black screen issue, just restart in safe mode with networking (press F8 before Windows begins to load). Once it boots up, install Malwarebytes and perform the updates. Once you’ve gotten it up to date, go ahead and run the full scan. Remove the infected files and reboot. After rebooting, download CCleaner and have it clean up your temp files. Then turn off system restore and turn it back on. This will remove your restore points, some of which are infected. If you have trouble connecting to the network wirelessly, plug in a network cable instead, those drivers tend to work in safe mode where wireless drivers don’t.

  32. Bob

Newest varient has task manager disabled. You cannot load malwarebyte. Safe mode does not help.

Where is the pc.exe file located so I can go in at dos prompt to delete?

Is there any other way out if you have this new variety that does not allow access to task manager or desktop?

  33. Sophie

I am soo happy and relieved i cannot express how greatful I am to Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware.

Everytime I turned on my computer my screen went blank black, then privacy center came up, it wouldnt close, it wouldnt let me do anything!!

This is genuine, I read the first comment on this page and it described the EXACT same problem I had! I thought that this site must b a scam, but i was soo desperate!

So I clicked on the download link from this page, and carefully followed the instructions as I went along, after instilation, and within aprox 8 mins of scanning, I clicked show results (came up with privacy center and related items) then removed selected, and restarted my computer.

I didnt keep my hopes up just incase, but I turned on my computer, and omg! thank god!! it was gone!!!! my usual screen appeared after a long two weeks of having privacy center! I couldnt believe it!! im soooo relieved and happy. :)

I came straight onto here to comment on how thankful I am to this site.
    Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou.

  34. Shawn

I am having the same problem as everyone else…I can turn the computer on though and get my regular desktop after Xing out of the main privacy screen. When I Ctrl Alt Del I don’t have anything that says PC.exe so I can’t cancel it and the virus keeps blocking me from downloading the Anti Malware software. Is it disguising itself under a different name on the Process screen of the Task manager?

  35. liz

Is anyone else getting “access denied” when trying to use google or ask after this thing downloads?

  36. lisa

Yes – I’ve been working all day on this horrible virus. I have no pc.exe.

I can’t log into the internet anymore. I am working off of another laptop.

I can’t run any of my scans because my computer shuts down right in the middle of the scan. (this is with Malwarebytes and Spybot)

    ANNNNYYYY help would be appreciated.

  37. Gina

Just want to let you know this beast got my home computer also. I paid Dell Support $239.00 (since the warranty on my computer had expired) and they couldn’t even remove it! Then talked me into buying Norton Spyware for $69.99 which didnt work either. I call my cable company and the tech had me download their FREE spyware and guess what? Its gone! I just wasted $309.99. I will NEVER buy a DELL COMPUTER AGAIN. HOW CAN I RECOUP THAT $309.99??

  38. Karl

Same problem as Liz and Shawn. No PC.exe — I think the PrivacyCenter has morphed a bit. How can I get rid of now?

  39. C T

I did the same, however there was rubbish all through the registry files and temporary internet files were all infected, so i would recommend soughting that out

Watch out for the process agent.exe to

    Peace Out

  40. DJ

Apparentley I have the mutated version. Task manager didn’t work. Nothing has worked. I had several support specialists tell me no anti-spyware would remove this pain in the rear. The only fix is to pay $300 to have it professional cleaned. Hackers should be caned . . . . publicly. Any help would be great.

  41. Chris

wow it works thnx guys my computer is restored from the annoying pest!! :)

  42. Jzekeira

Thanks a lot guys, it really works.:)

  43. Kristin

Ok – so I did seem to get rid of most of it but, not all of the effects. It is still preventing me from going to some websites so who knows what else it is still doing on the computer. I can’t go to or Anything I can do to make sure that all of this stuff is really gone?

  44. Kristin

Cant get to many other websites as well – yahoo for example.

  45. Justin

I am having the same problem (including the ctrl+alt+delete being disabled). When I try to reboot in safe mode it goes to blue screen for a few seconds and then reboots. Any suggestions. I know I can get rid of this if I just can get windows to launch in safe mode. Thanks very much for any advice you may have. Starting to loose it.

  46. krystal

I am having a serious problem! I don’t have the pc.exe or agent.exe in the processes area. Maybe it’s a mutated version and it’s not called Privacy center anymore. It’s called Control Center. Is there any new methods to removing this rogue-ware?
