Remove Adware Files from Mac In Two Ways

On this section, we have two ways to remove manually remove potentially unwanted program (PUP) or Adware from Mac computer. We can search the culprit program using Finder, or manually visit each folder containing the unwanted application.

Option 1 – Use Finder to Search for Adware or PUP

1 Go to Apple menu bar and click Go and then, select Computer.

2 On the upper right corner of the Finder window, type the name of Adware in the search box. Then, press Return on the keyboard.

3 Next, we will need to modify the search attribute to show hidden files. Click the + (Add) icon.

4 Toolbar will appear under “Search: This Mac“. Please click Kind and then select Other from the drop-down list.

5 New window “Select a search attribute” will appear. Look for the System Files item and check the corresponding box. Click OK button to save the changes.

6 Search criteria now show System Files. Make sure that parameter is set to are included to popular the search results with the Adware name.

7 Select all files from the search results and drag them to Trash.

8 Lastly, right-click on Trash icon and click Empty Trash.

Option 2 – Manually Find and Delete Adware Files

1 Navigate the Apple Menu bar and click on “Go“. Then, select “Go to Folder“.

2 Copy and paste, or type the following line in the field and press Enter on your keyboard:

/Library/LaunchAgents

3 LaunchAgents folder should open at this point. Look for Adware name or any suspicious items with the following format:

  • Adware.update.plist
  • Adware.AppRemoval.plist
  • Adware.download.plist
  • Adware.ltvbit.plist
  • Adware.agent.plist

4 Move each file to the Trash. This action may require administrator privilege. If you are not logged in as administrator, you need to provide required password.

5 Go to a different folder again using procedure from Step 1 and copy and paste or type the following line:

~/Library/LaunchAgents

6 Do the same process as in Step 3 and move each file to the Trash.

7 Next, we need to look at Application Support folder. Using the same method as above. Go to this location:

~/Library/Application Support

8 Find the same files as in Step 3 and drag them to the Trash.

9 Go back to Apple Menu, click Go, and then select Applications from the drop-down list.

10 Delete Adware or suspicious following folders just in case they do exist.
